'Hood The French Quarter, near historic Jackson Square and half a block from the Ursuline Convent, which was built in the 1750s, back when the city was still a French colony.

The Gist Hotel Provincial wins praise for one thing overwhelmingly: its location. Near Bourbon Street, the French Market, Café du Monde, and other marquee attractions, it's a favorite among repeat visitors. The most luxurious rooms have chandeliers, fireplaces, and views of the Mississippi River, but all 94 are embellished with French-style antiques. (Some online reviewers suggest the decor could use an upgrade.) Stella, the on-site restaurant, is one of New Orleans's best.

Thanks for Sharing Four BT readers recommended the Provincial, including mspeed, who has stayed there many times over the past 30 years: "It is a perfect place—no two rooms are the same, and it's conveniently close to everything! It's been locally owned by the same family since 1961, and staffers remember the names of every returning guest."
