The Grant Hotel

This 76-room hotel is about as basic as they come, but it's one of the best deals in bustling Union Square.

The Grant Hotel

About this Hotel

Price From $85

'Hood Union Square, three blocks from the Chinatown gate at Grant Avenue and Bush Street. Cable cars pass by on the street (you can hear the clanging from the lobby), and the hotel is a 10-minute walk from the Powell St. BART station.

The Vibe A clean, cheap, and convenient crash pad. The lobby has tall ceilings and white wainscoting, which add a touch of Victorian charm to the otherwise cramped industrial space.

Rooms The 76 rooms are simply attired with desks, dated plaid bedspreads, and in-room sinks. The rooms in the middle of the hotel are tight with little natural light (they face the neighboring building's brick walls); ask for one of the larger rear rooms ending in 15 or 16, which are quiet and sunny, with city views.

Plus The price is hard to beat for Union Square, and frugal solo travelers will appreciate the twin rooms.

Minus The few employees speak limited English, so don't expect a lot of trip-planning advice. Accommodations come with no extras, but hairdryers, irons, and mini fridges are available upon request.

Free Wi-Fi? Yes, in the lobby; available for $7 per day in rooms.

Credit Cards Accepted AmEx, Discover, MC, Visa.

Details Rooms with one full-size bed from $85, rooms with two full-size beds from $105, rooms with one queen-size bed from $95. Rates include breakfast.
