'Hood Ipanema, a beachside neighborhood whose residential high-rises date from the 1960s and 1970s. The hotel is a block from the beach on a tree-lined side street with outdoor cafés.
The Vibe A small but well-edited handicraft shop at the entrance is the first indicator of the hotel's bohemian spirit. The former owner was a painter, and her colorful block prints and paintings still adorn rooms and hallways. The hotel has an open-minded spirit that's in tune with the neighborhood: Ipanema has many gay residents, especially along nearby streets Farme de Amoedo and Teixeira de Melo.
Rooms The 56 rooms have cream-colored tile floors, up-to-date bathrooms, tiny wall- or ceiling-mounted TVs, and small, wood-framed mirrors. Street-facing rooms (superiores) don't have ocean views.
Plus One of Ipanema's best values, the hotel is a block from the famed bar Garota de Ipanema (originally called Bar Veloso), where Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes penned the breakthrough song "Girl from Ipanema."
Minus The noisy cleaning staff start their rounds early (8 a.m.), potentially waking up light sleepers.
