'Hood The Tenderloin on the border with Union Square. While the Tenderloin is grittier than other San Francisco neighborhoods, the hotel is near well-trafficked areas like the landmark Glide Memorial Church and is only a few blocks from the Powell Street subway station and the Theater District.

The Gist Online reviewers rave about the Serrano Hotel's amenities, like the flat-screen televisions, iPod docks, and Aveda products. The staff is fun and friendly, which is especially apparent during the complimentary afternoon wine-tasting hour held in the grand lobby. Rooms are a little small—some online reviewers say cramped—but the staff's unflagging attentiveness makes up for it. On-site Asian-fusion restaurant Ponzu is a solid choice for a pretheater splurge.
