'Hood North Beach, known for curvy Lombard Street, Coit Tower, and its restaurants, many of which pay homage to the neighborhood's Italian immigrant roots. The San Remo is located on a mostly residential street, with a charming café on the corner.

The Vibe Built in the early 20th century by Bank of America founder A.P. Giannini, the family-owned hotel strives to maintain an old-world charm. Read: vintage grandma-chic.

Rooms Simply dressed with an armoire, floral bedspreads, and a nightstand, rooms are best suited to people spending most of their time out and about. Bathrooms and showers are shared, and only some rooms have outside-facing windows (the remaining interior rooms have windows that open up into a hallway).

Plus Guests get a 15 percent discount at the Italian restaurant downstairs.

Minus Sixty-four tightly packed rooms on two floors share a limited number of toilets and showers. There's only one TV, and it's in a guest room—when the room is unoccupied, anyone can use the TV.
