About this Hotel
Price From $129
'Hood Just off Charles Street at the base of Beacon Hill, this historic, redbrick neighborhood is full of small boutiques, antique and gourmet food shops, and cozy restaurants. It’s a short walk to Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and to the Esplanade along the Charles in one direction and the Boston Common and Public Garden in the other.
The Vibe A bed-and-breakfast inn with some of the amenities of a hotel, the John Jeffries House is named for the man who founded the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital that once used the building as a dormitory for nurses (the hospital still owns it). It’s popular with visitors to Harvard, European travelers, and guests of functions being held at the very trendy, very expensive Liberty Hotel nearby.
Rooms All 46 rooms have efficiency kitchens and a decor that's basic, old-fashioned, and comfortable, with primarily Victorian furnishings. Rooms in the rear overlook the Charles River and East Cambridge.
Plus Although it’s a bed-and-breakfast inn, the John Jeffries House also offers room service from a nearby café. There’s a private garden alongside—a rare luxury in this densely populated neighborhood—and the inn is across the street from the Charles/MGH Station on the Red Line subway (which emerges here to cross the river into Cambridge).
Minus Rooms in the rear overlook the Charles River—and a busy interchange of four-lane Storrow Drive. All have interior storm windows that filter the highway noise, but not the occasional sound of ambulances speeding to the several nearby hospitals. Validated parking costs $25 a day.
Free Wi-Fi? Yes.
Credit Cards Accepted Yes.
Details A single-occupancy twin-bed studio from $113; a standard with one double or two twin beds from $129; a junior suite with a queen bed and a sleeper sofa, or a superior suite with separate living room from $147; a larger superior suite with one double or two twin beds and a sleeper sofa in the living room from $157.
