A Surprise Engagement Made Better
Using our powers for the good of the people: He's ready to propose. We help him make an offer she can't refuse.
"I'm going to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest with my girlfriend, Lisa," wrote Michael Stanton, a policeman from Fort Lauderdale. "While we're there, I'm going to propose to her. I hope the trip will be both romantic and memorable."
Michael Stanton didn't know exactly how he was going to propose--all he knew was that he wanted to surprise his girlfriend, Lisa Yelin, during the trip to Europe that they had been planning for months. When the folks at Vienna's Liechtenstein Museum--an 18th-century baroque mansion that houses the spectacular art collection of the Liechtenstein family--learned of Michael's intentions, they crafted a plan so Michael could propose in style.
It worked beautifully: Michael brought Lisa to the museum 15 minutes before closing, waited for a staff member's signal to enter the museum's ornate library, and then popped the question. "I was totally surprised!" says Lisa. "I'm still blown away." (She said yes.)
A few minutes after the big moment, a museum staffer (and our photographer) entered with champagne and a gift basket. A guide took them through the collection, pointing out love-related works. "We had the entire museum all to ourselves," says Lisa. "Who gets to experience that?" Michael was thrilled too. "I come out looking really, really good, and all I had to do was show up!"
Many thanks to...The Liechtenstein Museum, which has become an essential stop in Vienna since it opened in 2004. It also hosts weddings and special events (011-43/ 1-319-57-67-252, liechtensteinmuseum.at, admission $14).
