Hilton will build extended-stay hotels with $100-a-night studios

Hilton's upcoming line of extended stay hotels will be called Home2 Suites and will be decorated to appeal to young business travelers. Rates will average $100 a night. (That's cheaper than HomewoodSuites' average of $122 a night.)

Construction will begin on the four-story Home2 Suites properties later this year. Most of the 108 guest rooms at each location will be studios. Leisure travelers will also be able to stay and take advantage of the low rates. BNET Travel expects that Home2 Suites will compete on price with Value Place, a budget-based extended stay chain with 137 locations whose costs per week range from $189 to $239. Value Place plans 50 new hotels this year. Home2 Suites will also compete against TownePlace Suites and Candlewood, says a Hilton executive.

Home2 Suites by Hilton properties will each feature a common indoor activity room, a swimming pool, and an outdoor grill and patio, encouraging young business travelers to mingle with each other dorm-style. Guestrooms have modular furniture that appears reminiscent of Ikea. (No partition between the bedroom area and the living area in the studios, though. No bathtubs, either; only shower stalls.) The buildings are expected to be environmentally friendly because they'll feature recycled flooring material, EPA Water Sense plumbing fixtures by Kohler and efficient, dual-flush toilets.

About 100 properties are forecast to open by year-end 2012, mostly in the U.S. The first ones will open in New York City; White Marsh, Md.; Charlotte, N.C.; Jacksonville, N.C.; Gadsden, Ala.; Alabaster, Ala.; Elko, Nev.; and San Antonio, Tex.
